Sustainable Suburbs

Overview

More and more land area are slowly being transformed into future suburbs by developers due to the continuing growth and development of the cities. This fact opens up new and big opportunities for the developers and government bodies to create a suburb which are environmentally friendly and sustainable. This way, the future suburbs will be great places to live in and will also be able to combat climate change. Sustainable suburbs opens up a unique opportunity which will lead into a win-win situation for different parties such as the developers, the government agencies, the customers and the rest of the people affected in any way by the environment.

Sydney

The first sustainable suburb in Sydney, or perhaps in Australia, is currently being developed. Myrtle Street resident Michael Mobbs aims that the sustainable suburb in Sydney will be producing more food like fish, reduce the use of energy and generate cleaner air. There are certain key sustainability standards that must be followed when developing a sustainable suburb. Some of the principals of sustainability that must be followed are using solar power, rainwater tanks, reusing sewages, planting so many plants such as herbs and many more. If the sustainable suburb in Sydney turns out to be successful, the design can become a pioneer which will be used in developing other sustainable suburbs in Australia, and later on, in the whole world. There are certain techniques that the developers of this sustainable suburbs do to be able to reduce the amount of heat. Lightening the surface of the roof and the surface, planting more trees and recycling water are some of the techniques that will make a suburb more sustainable. With this, air-conditioning will not be needed in the houses of the people and other business establishments anymore. This means, more energy will be conserved.

International

There are a lot of countries world wide that has been developing and maintaining sustainable suburbs. These sustainable suburbs and countries have their own techniques and principles to follow in order to create a sustainable suburb. For example, in Seoul, South Korea, they took out the overhead freeway, restored the bed of the river, and reduced the heat of the city. This way, they can have a cleaner and cooler air, they only need to use a lesser amount of energy, and everyone can improve their health. Davis, California has their streets filled with looming trees at the sides. This wy, the air can be cooler. Sweden, Japan and Chile are some of the countries that has great ideas on what principles and techniques should be done to create a sustainable suburb. These communities produces24 percent of their own food, they use cars less because everyone is just close by in the suburb, and these communities use less energy.
